External Course

An External Course is a package built somewhere else — Articulate, Captivate, Rise — uploaded into the course and played inside it. The package reports its own progress and score back to the platform.

Supported standards

SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI, cmi5 and AICC. The standard is detected from the package rather than picked by hand.

The external course editor: the package upload area and the pass/fail and score settings.

The editor

Upload the package, then decide how its results count:

SettingWhat it does
Use pass/fail rulesthe package’s own pass/fail decides completion
Use scorethe package’s score becomes the activity’s score

With both off, completion falls back to the platform’s own rules.

If you are asked to test it anyway

  1. Upload a SCORM 1.2 package and a SCORM 2004 package.
  2. Play each as a learner, all the way to the end.
  3. Leave halfway through one and come back — it should resume where you left off.
  4. Check that progress and score reached the gradebook.

Where it usually breaks

  • Progress reported by the package not reaching the platform.
  • Resume returning the learner to the start instead of where they stopped.
  • A package that completes without the activity being marked complete.
